BSN Overview
A bachelor of science in nursing (BSN) degree prepares you for a job as a registered nurse. While you can work as an RN with an associate’s degree, nurses with a BSN are typically given more responsibility, supervisory roles, and higher salaries.
Education for the practice of professional nursing demands a substantial knowledge of nursing, using the behavioral and biological sciences as a theoretical base. Throughout the program, nursing courses are taken concurrently with courses in the College of Arts and Sciences, contributing to the development of the liberally educated practitioner.
The freshman year establishes the foundation for the study of nursing with an introduction to concepts and theories related to understanding the nursing practice. A clinical study is introduced in the sophomore year with the focus on health promotion and identification of risk factors. Clinical nursing skills are practiced first in the School's Skills Laboratory.
A BSN program, which typically takes four years, will include both liberal arts courses which fulfill general education requirements and classes specific to your major in nursing.
